How Narcan Works

Narcan works by quickly counteracting the effects of opioids, effectively reversing an overdose. The active ingredient, naloxone, blocks opioid receptors in the brain, restoring normal breathing in individuals who have experienced slowed or stopped respiration due to opioid overdose.

Key Points to Remember About Narcan

➊ Rapid Response Narcan can restore normal breathing within 2 to 3 minutes.

➋ Multiple Doses May Be Necessary In cases involving potent opioids like fentanyl, more than one dose of Narcan may be required.

➌ Safe for Non-Opioid Overdoses Narcan is safe to use even if you’re unsure about the substance involved. It won’t harm individuals overdosing on non-opioid substances.

➍ Post-Administration Care After administering Narcan, stay with the person for at least four hours or until emergency assistance arrives to ensure their breathing stabilizes.

Narcan: A Safe and Effective Emergency Response

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Narcan is a critical tool in addressing the opioid crisis. Its rapid action in reversing overdoses makes it an essential resource for individuals, families, and communities battling opioid addiction.
